BLAST®: Gets the hull on plane faster.
Honda Exclusive!
Learn More!
Boosted Low Speed Torque, or BLAST, uses Honda’s patented spark advance system to propel the boat to plane in just seconds.
When you move the throttle quickly, BLAST is activated:
- The throttle body opens up
- The air-fuel ratio goes to a richer setting
- The ignition timing advances aggressively
This allows the engine to make more torque, or power.
“Hole Shot” is vastly improved, as more horsepower gets the hull up on plane quicker.
Lean Burn Control: Better fuel economy.

Traditional motor designs use a fixed air-fuel mixture that does ok at low and high speeds, but not in the mid-range.
Honda added an Oxygen Sensor, which monitors the air/fuel ratio and automatically adjusts it as needed.
At cruising speed, Honda engines run on up to 20% less fuel than other comparably sized outboards.
The result? More power when you need it, and greater fuel economy.
VTEC® technology: Smooth acceleration and power.
Honda Exclusive!

Honda’s Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control (VTEC
®
) system provides power where and when you need it.
VTEC is the “replacement for displacement.”
- Outstanding performance without the inferior low rpm fuel efficiency of larger displacement competitors.
- Broader, flatter torque curve
- Smooth power delivery throughout the engine’s operating range.
How does VTEC work?
VTEC varies the lift and duration of the intake valves to deliver optimal performance at both low and high rpm, resulting in peak performance at all speeds.
VTEC uses two cam lobe profiles to operate the intake valves.
- The low-lift, short duration cam lobes (shown in red) provide strong torque at low rpm.
- At higher rpm, a synchronizing piston engages the third rocker arm on a high-lift cam (in blue). All three rocker arms are locked together. The intake valves are open for a longer period of time to produce more power.
- This results in a superior combination of power, torque and fuel efficiency.

Dual Stage Induction: Breathing easier improves performance.

Honda’s exclusive Dual Stage Induction manages air intake effectively to improve engine performance.
Most four-strokes use long manifolds to deliver air into the cylinder head. The BF135 and BF150 use a shutter valve inside the manifold to change the resonance and air flow.
Low-Mid RPM Operation:
- Under 3500 rpm, the shuttle valve is closed.
- A resonance effect creates waves of high-pressure air inside the manifold.
- This improves cylinder filling at low engine speed.
Benefit:
Maximizes low-end torque!
Mid-High RPM Operation:
- Over 3500 rpm, the shuttle valve opens and creates a “shortcut” for the air to flow.
- Manifold turbulence is decreased.
- The volume of air packed into each cylinder at mid and high rpm is improved.
Benefit:
Produces more power!
Honda’s exclusive Dual Stage Induction manages air intake effectively to improve engine performance.
While most four-strokes use long manifolds to deliver air into the cylinder head, Honda’s BF225/BF200 use a plenum chamber with twin butterfly valves to vary the volume and velocity of air flow.
Low-Mid RPM Operation:
- At low RPM ranges, the shuttle valves are closed, separating the plenum into two air chambers.
- This creates a resonance effect, which can increase cylinder filling and improve torque at low speeds.
At low speeds, the plenum is divided into two chambers, creating resonance.
At higher rpms, the valves open, eliminating resonance and increasing air flow.
Mid-High RPM Operation:
- At higher RPM ranges, the resonance effect can actually reduce torque.
- To overcome this, the shuttle valve opens, creating a single air chamber and eliminating the resonance.
- Manifold turbulence is decreased.
- The volume of air packed into each cylinder at mid and high rpm is improved.
The result? A simple, compact design that enhances both low speed drivability and high-speed performance.

4-Front Corrosion Protection: Fights the elements.
Honda Exclusive!
Learn More!
Honda’s 4-Front Corrosion Protection System fights off corrosion from harsh marine environments. This patented double-sealed, multi-layer paint process uses 4 different layers to protect the engine.
- The base is a corrosion-resistant Honda aluminum alloy, followed by a double-sealed treatment.
- An epoxy primer undercoat is applied.
- An acrylic resin metallic coating is baked on.
- A clear overcoat of acrylic finishes the process.
Honda engines have several other features designed to help protect them from the harsh marine environment:
- Sacrificial anodes protect the engine from galvanic corrosion.
- All fasteners and hardware are either stainless steel or a specially treated Dacro material.
- All wiring connectors are sealed to prevent water intrusion.
- Fresh water flush ports on select models allow you to flush the engine with a garden hose.
3-Way Cooling System: Cool-running durability.

Honda’s BF 75, 90, 100, 115, 135, and 150 feature three separate cooling systems.
-
The block is kept slightly hotter, for more power
- The cylinder head is slightly cooler, for increased durability.
- The exhaust manifold also runs cooler.
Two thermostats help to maintain engine temperature at the optimal levels.
The result is better reliability, more horsepower, and of course, superior cooling

“On Demand” Alternator: More charging power.
Honda Exclusive!
Learn More!
There's always plenty of electric power with Honda's “on demand” alternator. It gives you more charging power when you need it.
Our belt-driven system helps batteries to stay charged and keeps equipment going all day long.
In fact, the BF225’s “On Demand” 90 amp belt-driven alternator puts out the highest amount of amps in the outboard market.
Honda's alternator provides more electric power than the competition. For example, the BF200/225, shown in blue, has significantly more amps available than competitive four-stroke motors
Alternators, by the numbers
Honda advertises the real amps that you would see in real use. Some outboard manufacturers only advertise their total alternator output, measured at cool temperatures. This can be somewhat misleading
- Honda measures alternator output at normal operating temperatures. Most other manufacturers measure using a cool alternator, which produces more amps
- Honda advertises total amps and “charging amps.” Charging amps are the total amps minus the ignition’s requirements. For example, say an engine produces 27 amps in total. The ignition uses 5 amps, leaving 22 charging amps available to power accessories
Compare for yourself, and you’ll see: apples to apples, Honda motors give you the power you need.
