Honda R&D Americas, Inc. (HRA) has 14 locations around the continent that work together to create the best products and technologies that deliver new value to Honda and Acura customers. HRA has locations on the Atlantic coast to test marine products, in Denver, Colorado to test products in high-altitude conditions and in Toronto, Ontario to understand unique Canadian requirements.


  • Ohio Center:
    Raymond, Ohio

    The Ohio Center of HRA plays a key role in the development of automobiles and powersports products produced exclusively in North America for domestic and export markets. Work at this state-of-the-art facility emphasizes product engineering, prototype development and testing. Associates interface with suppliers and provide technical assistance to our manufacturing teams while enjoying the center’s close proximity to manufacturing facilities and the Transportation Research Center.

  • Cincinnati Office:
    Cincinnati, Ohio

    The HRA Cincinnati office works closely with the Burlington office in North Carolina working on Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine research and development.

  • Los Angeles Center:
    Torrance, California

    The Los Angeles Center has the challenging and exciting responsibility of envisioning the products customers will want tomorrow and beyond. The focus here is on new product design, product planning, market research, and advanced technology research. In addition, our LA associates strive to balance the needs of the individual with environmental and safety concerns. The Los Angeles Center has evolved from an early emphasis on advanced concept cars to the design of vehicles that are manufactured at Honda’s production facilities in the Americas.

  • Advanced Design Studio:
    Los Angeles, California

    The Advanced Design Studio is located in the LA Live area of downtown Los Angeles. The studio is tasked with the creation of future Honda and Acura automobile and mobility design concepts. In addition to styling, the studio also monitors changing consumer lifestyles and attitudes, and the multitude of other factors that will impact the designs of the future.

  • North Carolina Center:
    Haw River, North Carolina

    The North Carolina Center is involved in the continuous development of first-class power equipment products. While providing product engineering, prototype development and testing, these associates work closely with suppliers to further our goals of technologically advanced products and local parts sourcing.

  • Honda Aero Inc.:
    Burlington, North Carolina

    HRA’s Burlington office is located inside the Honda Aero Inc. headquarters building and manufacturing facility. The R&D Facility works with the Honda Aircraft Company, Inc. to design gas turbine engines for the Honda Jet. The HF120 gas turbine engine is a Honda first: over-the-wing mount design that will be lightweight, compact and high-performance. Located in close proximity to the Burlington Alamance County regional airport.

  • South Carolina Office:
    Timmonsville, South Carolina

    The South Carolina office of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. is located within the Honda of South Carolina Manufacturing Facility which is Honda’s exclusive Power Sports factory in North America. The location at the manufacturing facility provides the ideal location for the HRA associates to work side by side with members of other Honda divisions. Associates at this facility are responsible for providing technical assistance to the manufacturing facility and providing development resources for sourcing activities, in addition to their role of developing Power Sports products.

  • Marine Engine Research Center:
    Grant-Valkaria, Florida

    The Florida Center is responsible for marine product testing and innovations. Tasked with bringing fuel efficiency, performance, and ease of operation to the sea, Honda Marine was the first to offer a full line of lightweight 4-stroke outboard motors. Located south of Orlando and north of West Palm Beach, the Florida center has a prime location for testing engines in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Denver Office:
    Denver, Colorado

    The site for the Denver Office was chosen because it is almost exactly one mile above sea level. Established in 1979, this office is involved with engine and emission development as well as supporting the development of other vehicle systems impacted by the challenges high altitude, cold temperatures and mountainous terrain can present.

  • Detroit Office:
    Ann Arbor, Michigan

    HRA’s Mobility Collaboration Garage is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside the Motor City. Here, HRA’s Automobile Technology Research (ATR) Group is performing research in two main areas: the first is in precompetitive cooperative research with other automakers, the U.S. government, and universities on advanced automotive safety. The second is in identifying and researching future technology areas, particularly those in the Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric space.

  • Canada Office:
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    The Toronto office is located within Canadian Honda’s head office, in Markham, just north of Toronto. They are responsible for collaborating with other R&D divisions and Canadian Honda to improve understanding of Canadian related issues that could affect our vehicles globally.

  • Halifax Office:
    Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

    The Halifax office conducts research dealing with over-the-road vehicle durability testing in the unique extreme conditions of Canada, including very low temperatures, wide ranges of humidity, and heavy salt usage.

HRA has one of the world’s highest resolution crash test barriers at its Advanced Safety Research Center located at the Ohio Center. It also includes the world’s first pitching crash test simulation sled. HRA’s dedication to safety is unmatched and starts with research. The associates in this facility are responsible for developing and testing nearly all safety systems on Honda’s U.S.-developed vehicles.

Keeping our associates safe is just as important as keeping our customers safe. HRA has received awards from the Union County Safety Council and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation for achieving a record-setting amount of man-hours worked without a lost time injury. HRA is also consistently less than
1/3 of the R&D industry average for recordable injuries.

The 2014 Honda Odyssey is the first minivan to earn the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ in 2013, which includes an overall good rating in the stringent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) small overlap frontal crash test. The research done at the Ohio Center’s Advanced Safety Research Center paved the way for these industry-leading results with more expected in the future.

The 2014 Acura MDX has earned the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ in 2013, which includes an overall good rating in the stringent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) small overlap frontal crash test. The research done at the Ohio Center’s Advanced Safety Research Center paved the way for these industry-leading results with more expected in the future.

The 2012 Acura TL was one of the two vehicles to be the first in the industry to earn a GOOD rating from the IIHS in its stringent new frontal small overlap collision test.

The 2001 Honda Civic Coupe was one of the first of two vehicles in the industry to earn a 5-star crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Real Impact Honda Leads Industry-First Development of Visualization Technology, Advancing the Study of Crash Test Simulations

Real Impact Crash-Simulation Visualization Technology –
This visualization software was co-developed by Honda R&D Americas, Inc. and 3DXCITE, and enables engineers to more easily study the results of a crash simulation, test different design approaches and implement design changes with greater speed and efficiency.
